Matrix 4: Laurence Fishburne explains why it doesn't appear in the fourth installment - Hollywood News

Neo's story will continue on the big screen 17 years later with Matrix 4. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return, respectively, as the protagonist and Trinity under the direction of Lana Wachowski. The actor has recently explained, in an interview with New York Magazine, why we won't see Neo's mentor in the continuation of the saga. The reason is simple: he has not been called for his return.

The answer to Morfeo's absence can be found in The Matrix Online, a video game released in 2005 that aims to function as a continuation of the film trilogy by expanding the canon created by the Wachowski sisters. In it, Morpheus dies at the hands of a mysterious assassin. Therefore, Matrix 4 could have taken this event into account when developing its history.
